How to Spot Fake Pokémon Cards

Counterfeits have become good — but never good enough. Here are the checks collectors actually use, from the light test to the texture test.

The light test

Real Pokémon cards have a thin black or dark blue layer sandwiched inside the cardboard. Hold the card in front of a strong light: a real card blocks most of it; many fakes glow like a lampshade.

Colour, font and energy symbols

Fakes commonly miss the exact card-back blue (too dark, too light, or blurry swirls), use slightly wrong fonts, or draw energy symbols with the wrong proportions. Compare against a card you know is genuine — side by side, differences jump out.

Texture, foil and weight

Modern ultra rares have an embossed texture you can feel. Fakes are usually flat and glossy all over, bend too easily, or feel slippery. Foil patterns on fakes often shine uniformly instead of following the artwork.

The details fakes get wrong

Check the fraction, the set symbol and the copyright line — counterfeits often pair a card with the wrong set code, an impossible collector number, or a misspelled copyright. Scanning the card with Card Dex instantly reveals whether that exact name-and-number combination really exists.
